This has two advantages:Īllows you to go through the archive chronological Whatever tool you use, you want to organize those pictures by year - month - day in timeline like fashion. You could go through each picture one by one and describe it entirely, but that's the most inefficient way of going about.Ī good way is to use the metadata that's already there: date of creation is a good starting point. Without descriptive metadata - information describing your pictures - you won't know what's what. Even so, the hard part is assessing what's what and what you want to keep. There's lots of tips on consolidation and de-duping, so that might reduce the number of objects already. I can give you a few tips with the organizing part. I know, quite a lot I'm asking for, and I also know that many people have already asked those self-hosting questions, but I guess my situation is a bit… special.Īny kind of help is greatly appreciated!! Generally speaking, what tips and recommendations would you give me for my situation?

I also love the google photos search, so photoprism would be a very nice feature to have. Which NAS solution would you recommend? I have a couple of Raspberry Pi's lying around, so I guess I could use those with some new drives, but which Cloud solution would you recommend? How should I manage all of those files? And where should I then store them? Should I first take care of the NAS and sort things from there?

Which programs/tools do you recommend to detect duplicates and be able to choose between them? Especially when I download all my Data from google photos, I want to be able to choose my originals, instead of the downloaded version. Now, since google photos also stopped providing unlimited storage, I want to start putting all of our pictures on a NAS or something like that. On there I split them into whose pictures they are (so everyone can sort on their own). The problem is, how should I go forward from here? For now, I just finished extracting the photos/videos on one drive and transferred them to my second SSD. My mother also likes to sort her stuff, so she can do that. Sorting out the useless stuff shouldn't be that hard because lots of it is in separate folders like "Telegram" or something like that. A very big portion of the files on google photos are still on the Drives, and are thus lower quality duplicates.Īs you can see, quite a mess I've gotten myself into. On my drive are approximately 30k pictures and videos, and on my parents' circa 2-3k. But amongst those useless files also are important pictures and videos, which we all thought we had lost.Īnd if that wasn't enough, since a couple of years, I set up google photos for me and my parents, so that everything gets uploaded and deleted from the phone. Scattered across these Drives are at least 15k photos/videos, many of them definitely duplicates, and also many of them just useless stickers my mom uses to send around (nowadays she deletes them, but back then she used to save them.). Now, out of curiosity, I just went ahead and looked into those Drives and realized that I have a big photos-pile-mess.

When one of us got a new phone or their storage filled up, I just used to simply drag the whole phone folder onto my PC and by the time they filled up and got older I just got new HDD's. Over the last decade, I have accumulated lots and lots of pictures and videos on several HDD's, simply because I didn't really have a sense of storing and backing up files/photos.

I asked posted this over at r/DataHoarder, but felt like it would be a good idea to post this here as well, since I really need some advice. how the hell should I manage all of that?
